A Visit To the Reproductive Center

By Dr. Harris Brown

When a couple has been trying to conceive unsuccessfully, when should they visit a reproductive center for help? Infertility is a big issue for a lot of couples and may need infertility treatment in order to conceive. There are many reasons why couples experience more infertility problems today. The number one issue is that they wait until they are in their latter thirties and forties before they start trying.

Statistics show that women under thirty have a fifty-five percent chance at conception, while this decreases to forty percent for women ages thirty-one to thirty-five and less than ten percent for women over thirty-five. But even so, with the fertility treatments available these days and with the aid of reproduction specialists there are more women having babies successfully well into their forties.

A reproductive center can help, but the question is when to go. A year of trying to become pregnant with no success should be done for a couple in their twenties. Once the couple, especially the woman, is in her thirties, some doctors will shorten that time to around six months.

It is when the woman is over 40 that some fertility testing may be performed immediately, but at the most it could be after three months of trying and fertility charting. When infertility is an issue normally the man will be the first one tested.

The first test run on a couple would be to test the man. This test is the least invasive and most simple to perform. All he has to do is give a semen specimen and a sperm analysis can be done to determine if there is male factor infertility involved. Sperm are assessed for presence, and motility and mobility. If there is an indication that it is male factor, then the reproductive center can work with him in helping to treat his condition, if treatable. If his sperm is okay, then the testing can continue with the woman.

The first test to run on a woman is an ovarian assessment. This gives an indication of the health of the eggs and the hormone levels. The reproductive hormones of estradiol, FSH or follicle-stimulating hormone will be checked. A reproductive center will also run a clomiphene citrate challenge and possibly an ovarian antral follicle count, which shows the numbers of the reserve of ovarian eggs.

The fallopian tubes and uterus will be assessed. Blocked tubes and misshaped uterus from congenital anomalies, fibroid or polyps can be discovered by inserting a dye up in the uterus and tubes, or an X-ray or ultrasound. A reproductive center can run a number of tests to determine the severity of the infertility and can home in on a proper infertility treatment for the couple.

The good thing about using reproductive centers is they have a staff of qualified and experienced reproductive specialist on hand. New patients should ask about seeing success story testimonies, because many centers will have plenty of these on hand. Treating infertility isn't a quick fix, it can take months or years to see results. This is why a good team of specialists can help to make the dream of parenthood a reality.

  1. Myself and my husband had been trying to get pregnant for 18 months before I was referred to Native Iyabasira fertility solution. We had no definite diagnosis of what was wrong and had become very frustrated. In November 2015 I was given a thorough reproductive health work up, I found out I had low progesterone, thyroid issues and a stomach issue which was affecting my ability to get pregant. This was a very thorough process involving dietary, hormonal and physical investigations and started the recommended treatments in Feb 16 2016. I was pregnant by april 16. I had a baby boy in march 2017. I was carefully monitored and mother Iyabasira was always available for me. I can recommend native iyabasira more highly so much so we are hoping to start trying for a second baby under her guidance.
