What the different childcare options are for your children

By Henry Runter

There are numerous questions that need to be answered when it comes to having a baby. Both parents will have a number of questions in mind - from how you'll raise the child to the costs involved with a child to what you'll name the baby - their will always be a range of things to be considered. However, there is a question that can sometimes be overlooked when thinking about having a baby - "what is going to happen when we are both ready to go back to work?". While some people consider being a stay at home parent is the best option, not everyone can afford this, as it will mean only one income coming in.

If you're not able to afford the 'stay at home parent' option, there are still a few child care options for you to consider. The most ideal option is to have a family member or friend to take care of your child, however not many will be as lucky to have that option available. The other two options available are hiring a nanny or a childcare centre.
While there may be a number of pros with hiring a nanny (such as one-on-one care for your child), this is the more costly option for childcare. Paying a full time or part time nanny to take care of your child can average from $8 an hour to $19 an hour. That means that hiring a nanny to look after your child during regular work hours (9am to 5pm) can cost you around $700 a week! For some, that is one person's entire income for the week.

If the option of hiring a nanny is a bit too expensive for you, your next option is to put your child into an early childcare centre. This is going to be the most affordable option for most, as this is the most popular form of childcare. Although putting your child into a childcare centre won't mean one-on-one care throughout the day, they will be in a completely supervised environment and given the option to socialise and interact with other kids their own age. This is a great start to preparing your child for a schooling environment.

Wondering what your child will be doing throughout the day? Many childcare centres offer a range of activities to peak your children's interests... gardening, cooking, music, sewing and painting are only some of the many activities your children could be participating in. To ensure your child is getting the best education for their age, some childcare centres will divide the kids into age appropriate groups.

Not sure if your child is old or young enough to be in a childcare centre? The age allowance will differ between centres, as some will take newborns to 5 year olds, others may take 2 year olds to 5 year olds. With fully qualified early childhood education teachers looking after and teaching your children, you can rest assured that they are in the best of hands.

Have you ever heard of the Montessori philosophy? As a parent, you will naturally want your child to be at a centre that they are completely comfortable and safe at. Take a look online at the different childcare centres available, so that you can find the centre that will best suit your child.
