Advantages Of Using Plant Covers In The Garden

By Jimmy Dalton

Like many that love being outside and spending quality time in their garden but have struggled each year with small harvest and minimal garden growth, likely have not used plant covers. Those that use cloches (plant covers) have found great success in their harvest and have saved a lot of time and effort in their gardening.

The word 'cloche' come from the French language and means 'bell'. Actually, it's the French who are the ones who developed the idea of covering plants with a glass cover to protect their plants from cold weather during the colder times of the year.

Cloches Can Make Gardening Life More Simple And Produce More

Cloche actually are just like a smaller version of a greenhouse. In the past cloches were made out of heavy glass. Today they're made out of plastic. Cloches come in various sizes with the large ones protecting the more mature and developed plants. The covers can be used in the summer as well so they can help the plant keep its moisture and create a humid and moist atmosphere for the plant to thrive in.

The larger covers work really well for gardens such as raised bed gardens where the plants are close to each other. These large covers can extend over multiple plants and effectively shelter them. The plant covers are excellent in keeping out insects and pest and animals, but they are extremely effective in sheltering your plant from destructive weather related situations such as hail, snow, frost, ice and high winds. They also have built in vents on the top to release and circulate air.

Steel pegs keep the plant covers securely in place so they don't blow away are knocked over easily. There is no assembly required and come with holes along the rim to drive the pegs into the ground.

Here Are Some Things Your Plant Will Be Protected From With A Plant Cover

Extremely cold weather

Invading wildlife

Pests

Sleet

UV damage

Cloches can be used multiple times and are not heavy at all, making them very convenient to use. They are transparent so it's perfect for plant to absorb the sunshine and warmth while it is not exposed to the cold weather. They're fantastic in trapping the moisture and humidity so plants can grow even faster.

Because they are just like a mini-greenhouse you won't need to have the stress of transplanting your fruit and vegetable plants. All you need to do is place the cloche over your plant and you can sleep well at night knowing that your plant has a solid barrier around it to grow peacefully. When the covers are over the plant, it will help in warming the soil to a comfortable temperature for the seed to germinate, thus allowing early planting and a longer growing season. Water your plant with the cloches on is as simple as watering through the top vent or using a drip irrigation system.

Final Thoughts

There are plenty of positives overs negatives when it comes to using cloches. If you're looking for an effective gardening tool to increase your crop yield, I would highly urge you to use plant covers.
