Fire Extinguishers Systems

By Sal Cahan

Controlling and extinguishing fires is essential because fire can cause a lot of monetary loss within minutes. Water has been the most effective and ancient way of putting out any fire. New technologies for controlling and extinguishing fires have been identified since then. In addition, the exact progression of fire has been analyzed and this has helped in using even water more effectively to control any fires.
Research on fires requires isolation of the factors that are contributing to or likely to contribute to any fire outbreak. Oxygen and inflammable materials are the requirements for any fire. Apart from these two factors, presence of heat is also essential for any fire to start. At times though some chemicals may trigger fire, and thereafter, other inflammable materials in the surroundings would catch fire, which can then keep on progressing till something is done to control it.

Both water and water foam are used in fire suppression systems to extinguish fire. However, water can not be used in every situation. Hence, different chemicals are used to control fires. The systems that are based on those chemicals are usually more effective in extinguishing wide range of fire types but also more expensive. Fire suppression systems consist of wet chemicals such as halon and carbon dioxide.

There different systems for fire extinguishers. Usually they are based on two operating systems: on a compressing expellant and on a cartridge operated method. The way the first system works is that since the expellant is inserted in a vessel it is extracted during the operation of the system. It is extracted at a great speed and causes the separation of the oxygen from the fire.

In the second system, i.e., the cartridge operated firefighting equipment; the expellant is in a cartridge. Cartridges may have nitrogen or carbon dioxide in them. Other typ

Other types of cartridges, such as those with some dry powders, are also used. However, cartridge type of fire extinguishers is less popular. Wheeled fire extinguishers are larger than the handheld cylindrical type of fire extinguishers. However, wheeled fire extinguishers can be used to stop bigger fires than those that can be stopped by the handheld varieties.
