For travelling, there is nothing like the south of France. It has stunning weather, with summer days that last right up through October, meaning there are lots of opportunities to get out of wherever you are staying and experience the landscape, or perhaps a nice relaxing meal. To list all the things that are great to do in the south of France would be an impossible task. But in what follows I do mention a few places that just have to be visited.
Nice is among the best places to go to really get your teeth into some French culture. It is certainly the place to go if you are into your art, and in this sense can only really be rivalled by the likes of Paris. There you will find some excellent modern specimens from Pop Art and New Realism, found at the Muse d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain; whereas the older biblical themed paintings at Muse National Message Biblique Marc Chagall will take your breath away.
Arles is another great city of visit. It has a long Roman heritage and contains a Theatre, Amphitheatre and Forum from that period. It was also the base for Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, during their partnership as par of the 'Studio of the South'. It was here that Van Gogh painted some of his most famous pieces. This is an incredibly beautiful and fascinating city to visit, and should be visited by anyone going to the south of France.
The Canal du Midi is a spectacular sight to be seen by anyone in the south of France. It is a beautiful tree lined canal that runs all the way from Toulouse to the Mediterranean Sea, making it the largest UNESCO World Heritage Site in the world. Walk, ride a bike or get a boat along this stunning piece of civil engineering.
There are plenty of other places worthy of mention, but to mention them all would be to never stop writing. The south of France, wherever you go within it, is a glorious and interesting place to go.
