The Causes Of Sore Nipples

By June D. Bunker

There are several reasons that can lead to sore nipples while you are in the period of nursing your newborn. Each of these reasons can be managed and treated with ease. Like any other pain, before you treat it, it is imperative that you establish the cause of the tenderness and to initially treat the source of the discomfort to prevent the pain from recurring.

You will find the causes of the tenderness in your breasts and how you can treat the pain below. There are some reasons that may overlap between one another so it is vital that you determine the pain and where it is actually coming from.

A wrong way of latching is usually the main cause of breast soreness that many women face. It is not easy for any new mother to find out if her baby is latching onto her breast properly when she is nursing the baby. On top of that, there could be other issues, for instance reversed or undersized nipple, or even breast enlargement.

If you are unsure, it is advisable that you consult with a lactation practitioner, a registered nurse or, if you feel comfortable, another mother who has experienced tenderness when nursing her baby. Ask them for advice on this issue and show them your technique of breastfeeding to check if you are doing anything wrong.

Another reason that could have caused the tenderness could be cracked nipple. Generally, this is caused by poor nursing technique. A common problem to this could be that your baby is only sucking on the nipple, instead of taking in the whole areola. It could also be caused by an unusual anatomy in your young-ling's mouth such as a tied tongue.

Almost every new mother would come across soreness due to blocked duct which is caused by inefficiency of milking by the baby. A mother tends to produce milk faster than a baby sucking out the milk while he is being nursed. When this happens, the milk is sucked back and travels back through the ducts. The milk will then spread through the breast tissue hence the cause of pain, swelling and soreness.

These are just a few of the causes of sore nipples that you might have come across. In order for you to tackle the cause, it is highly suggested that you consult with your gynecologist to ensure you are given proper advice.

  1. Indeed there are many reasons for sore nipples and breast augmentation is one of them. But it depends on how sensitive that woman is. That's why there are some compatibility tests, before pushing forward for the surgery. Their role is to determine whether or not a woman can have the surgery without any risks.
