Choosing The Right Materials For Your Remodel

By Ben Pultur

The type of tile you use in your home can affect the style and quality of floor, wall or countertop you have installed. Each tile has a certain style, use, and quality to it and if used in the wrong place you could run into problems. For example, natural stone has a beauty style but should be used as walling, sink tops, countertops and if using slate, the floors. If you are using ceramic tile then you can use it on the floors or just about any area indoors.

By installing the wrong tile in the wrong area you are putting yourself at risk of having to replace the tiles. This could cost you more time and money than you have. For example, if you plan on using a granite tiles on a high traffic floor you will find it will get scuffed up very quickly. Never use weak materials in high traffic areas.

Some of the best tiles to purchase as ceramic tiles due to their ability to be used almost anywhere. They are a very versatile tile that comes in many shapes, qualities, and colors. The only place you normally have to avoid using ceramic tiles is the outdoors because they are susceptible to freezing and other harsh weathering.

Another thing to keep in mind is the style and look of the tile. In the kitchen you want a hard tile that looks good as a countertop and granite is an excellent choice. It may not handle foot traffic very well but it can handle heat and daily use of the kitchen. Natural stone tiles also look good in the bathroom as sink tops and walling. It creates a natural feel that makes your shower more relaxing.

Always research what tiles you are using and how to use them. The last thing you want to do is pay for someone to repair cracks and broken materials. A remodel should be fun and exciting so always remember to do your research and have fun.
