Creative Ideas For Your Playroom or Nursery

By Eve Canipe

Whether you are decorating for baby, toddler or an older child, creating this special space is one of the most fun areas to decorate in any home. Consider these suggestions to help plan out your child's room or playroom.

Think about the walls when planning a room for a baby or toddler, as small children are so responsive to any visual stimuli. Photography is a great way to decorate and help children learn about their environment. You can even transform furniture into a visual statement. Find a company that produces custom photo tables and place one in your child's room or playroom. Choose a color that suits your dcor and select family photos, pictures of cars, teddy bears, baby or even a giant flower to cover the whole table top, whatever matches your theme.
Another fun photo option, especially in a nursery, would be to use a framed event sign-in board. Sign-in boards are typically used at weddings or other special events and contain a photo surrounded by wide matting which people sign. At your baby shower, bring the sign-in board, and friends and family can write special messages for the baby. After the birth, you can insert a picture of your baby and place it on the nursery wall. You could also create framed photo collages for the walls of the child's room, featuring family photos.

As children grow into the toddler and preschool stage, you can create items that are both attractive and educational. Some photo companies can create customized learning and alphabet charts perfect for the child's room or play area. These are great when utilizing family pictures or whatever subject you think will appeal to the child. Also consider enlarging and framing photography to decorate the walls of a child's room. Again, you could use family pictures or pictures that fit within your decorating theme.

If you are artistic, you could design a mural or large piece of artwork for one wall of the room, such as a large tree, a rainbow or perhaps butterflies, flowers or dragonflies. There are also handy, oversized decals available that are not only decorative, but easily removed as your child's interest change. In addition to dcor, storage is always an issue in any child's room. Mount a bookshelf to one wall and fill it up with attractive baskets or colorful bins. Baskets are easy for kids to dump out, but also are easy to use for clean-up and create more attractive and usable storage than a toy box. You can also place shelves in one half of a closet and place baskets or bins to increase floor space in the child's room.
