A Quick Two-Minute Guide To Helping Your Teens Keep Their Rooms Clean

By Harry Barber

What follows is a very fast and very easy plan to help any teen clean up their room. All the better if the room looks like a hippy commune without the hippies. Simply set your timer for 15 minutes every day - quick enough, but not as quick as this guide, believe us! It's about cleaning that room from top to bottom, working gradually and steadily. By the end of the week, you will be amazed at the progress! When you are ready, start the weekly plan.

The first few weeks may be tough, so you want to get a hand in things and help out, or at least supervise things. The first step would be to ensure that all your child's items have a proper place. Don't worry about perfect organization, just get the surfaces clear off.

What You Need: A trash bag or two A laundry basket The donate bucket will come in handy, as this may be the point where your teen has graduated from Transformers to girls...or from Barbie dolls to boys. Assorted baskets or buckets for smaller items Labels - a must if you want to keep things organized.

Before All Daily Tasks: Make the bed - have your child do this before the daily task

Monday Clear all surfaces (dressers, table, nightstands, etc.)

Day Two Dusting the surfaces shouldn't be a problem because they should all be cleared off at this point.

Wednesday No need for any deep-dives here as your child would clear the visible parts of the floor.

Thursdays Sweep or vacuum

Friday Also known as "pick a spot day." It means what it says. Make a list of all the problem spots in the room and slowly check them off.

Underneath the bed Behind the dresser One dresser drawer One shelf

Saturday This is where your child has to change linens and bring everything dirty to the laundry room.

Sunday Free Time. That is, if your teen didn't miss a spot.

You want to keep track mentally of all items that your teen inadvertently scatters. This is time to think out of the box by using a box, or maybe a basket, a shelf, you name it. You may need to try several different solutions before you find one that works. If something seems to be working, leave it alone!

Each day, encourage your child to perform the scheduled tasks. 15 minutes should be sufficient, just make sure you have that timer set up. Don't be too picky, just try to guide them. Remember, you're dealing with teens, and they are wise enough to know that if their dresser is cleared off on Monday and everything is strewn on the floor the next day, they will REPEAT THE SAME PROCESS AND CLEAR OUT THAT CLUTTER on Wednesday.

All it takes is fifteen short minutes a day for your teen to keep his/her bedroom spick and span - and two minutes in one sitting to read this article, which we hope had helped.
