Tricks and Tips for the Best Baby Skin Care

By Sofia Andrade

If you haven't ever cared for a newborn before, your baby's skin care can be intimidating. Taking care of your baby's skin is just one of the new things you need to think about as a new parent and it is easy to get bogged down with the feeling of needing to be a perfect parent. Would it help you to learn that common sense is at the heart of baby skin care? Babies don't need fancy or expensive products to keep their skin clear and clean. Really, you don't need very many products at all. If you want to learn how to develop a skin care routine for your new baby, keep reading!

A baby's bath does not have to be very long at all. In fact, keeping your newborn in the bath for too long can actually be harmful! The bath need only be long enough to wet the baby down, soap him up and then rinse him off. Once you have rinsed off your baby, rub some light (baby) lotion or moisturizer into his skin and then towel him dry. To ensure that rashes and yeast infections don't develop make sure you dry your baby completely. Remember how rolly and polly a newborn baby's skin is! Make sure you use a soft towel!

Always make sure the baby's bath water is not too hot before you put the baby into it. Your baby's skin is incredibly sensitive and is easily burned by water that is too hot. In fact, it isn't until our later years that we even begin to enjoy hot baths or long hot showers. Put your elbow into the water to see if the bath is too hot for your baby. Your elbow has very sensitive skin so if the water is too hot or cold for your elbow you need to adjust the temperature of the water. Your baby's bath water should, at most, be lukewarm.

A newborn baby needs specific types of skin care products. Don't use skin care products meant for babies older than six months of age on your newborn. A newborn baby's skin needs time to develop and learn how to combat outside environmental influences. Your baby's skin is incredibly sensitive and is more prone to irritation than it will be when your baby gets older. When looking for skin care products, be sure that the products you buy are made for newborns!

Covering your baby's head with a hat and shading the two of you with an umbrella are extra precautions you can take. If your son or daughter does develop a sunburn (even with all of the precautions you have taken) you can treat it with a damp cool cloth a few times a day. Keeping your skin clean is the foundation of skin care. People like to overcomplicate things, especially when it comes to health and beauty, but this is one thing that is best left simple. Babies do not need all of the acne fighting and cleansing products that adults do. Don't use your baby as a lab mouse with these products because they aren't made for babies. All it takes is a little research and intuition to get the right routine going. You will love the can that you can put your baby in.
