An Amazing Visit To Beechworth

By Jasmine Zahara

Anyone wishing to experience the gold rush days need only to visit Beechworth, Australia. This town goes back to the 1800's when the discovery of gold attracted thousands of miners from all over the world. Included in these pioneers were the Chinese whose presence is still marked in various areas of the town. With all these occupants, the air was filled with excitement, disagreements and other emotions that come from a gathering of this size. All of this adds to the town history.

With the gold discovery of 1852, the area erupted into a population of thousands of occupants. These people were from all walks of life and lived wherever possible. Among these pioneers were the Chinese whose presence is noted restoration at this location. By 1867, a total of 4 million ounces had been found. Eventually, the gold ran out and the remaining people build the town of Beechworth.

In preserving the town every effort has been made to make the restorations authentic. The Historic and Cultural Precinct, for example, has restored original courthouse and other buildings. It is an excellent place to explore. Shops with special attractions, such as pottery, collectables, handcraft and artist offerings abound. Many of these items cannot be found elsewhere.

The town can be reached by driving, taking a bus or train or by flying into the nearby airport of Albury. Rental cars or taxis are available there for traveling on to Beechworth. This town is unique in that it has been restored in a 19th century theme and is an experience that one will not soon forget.

Accommodations in the city have been developed with the comforts of every visitor in mind. Bed and Breakfast, self-contained, hotel, motel, caravan and camping sites are available. All have been designed for the various tastes of the visitor. Some establishments allow pets as well.

Activities are many. With nearby interests such as vineyards, national parks, the Beechworth Gorge and Woolshed Falls those who enjoy the outdoors will find many areas to discover. Exploring the various gourmet restaurants is an experience that can satisfy even the most particular food expert. The nearby Australian Alps area provides the opportunity for those who enjoy winter sports.

Day trips and tours are available and enable the visitor to learn more about the area and its culture. Perhaps a Ghost Tour to visit a former lunatic asylum, a visit to a place where bees are cultivated or to a brewery to taste their wares would be of interest. Town events such as festivals, visiting performers and other things are available throughout the year.

Artists from around the world are now town residents, which has resulted in the opportunity to visit the many pottery, art and other specialty shops. Whatever one's preference they will find what they are looking for here. Those interested in making a purchase for their home or for a gift will find something that is not available in markets at other locations and will make it a lasting reminder of one's visit to this delightful town.
