By Patrick Fitz-Gibbon

It makes sense to allow your youngster to have their own pet. It not only encourages them to look after something but also allows them independence and gives them a feeling of responsibility. Having said that there are things to take into consideration when deciding which can be the most suitable pet for your little one.

Age: The age of your youngster is an essential factor, if the child is particularly young then you will not want to get a pet which can take a lot of maintenance and additionally something which they may not be able to handle. An ideal pet will be definetely something that is comparatively small and does not demand a large amount of handling.

Some excellent pets will be definitely a rabbit, hamster, guinea pig or fish. Even though these animals need care, compared to bigger animals like cats and canines they have a tendency to be easy to maintain and simple for a smaller child to handle. They do not call for regular walks and may be left for longer periods of time, like when the youngster is at school.

Price: Most pets can cost a lot in terms of maintenance and the purchase themselves. Commonly the bigger the pet is the more it could cost you in feed, vets and purchasing, for that reason if you are on a budget then you will probably want to buy a pet that will not be vastly expensive.

Varieties: Again, various species of animals are a lot more suited to kids than others. If you were to buy a large dog for example then naturally the youngster could have difficulties dealing with him and whilst they make good companions large dogs can be boisterous particularly if they are young and this may lead to the child becoming intimidated by him. This could mean they lose interest or even worse that they turn out to be fearful of their new pet. For that reason consider pets that are relatively small which can encourage the youngster to pet and play with him. Fish on the other hand can lead to your child becoming bored as although they are interesting to observe in their aquarium, generally youngsters get bored when they are not able to pet and play with them like other species.

If your child grows up with a pet, they can and should learn an extensive amount about the specific species and with encouragement they will learn a lot about taking on responsibilities that will stand them in good stead when they get older. Not only is owning a pet satisfying but also educational and your child will love the fact they possess a new best friend that can offer them playtime and reward their care with unconditional love.
