Is My Dog Trainer Any Good?

By Dirk Gruenberg

It is smart to get some professional help when trying to train your dog. First, of course, you need to find a dog trainer, however, that you feel good about working with. If you think you have found them, sit in on one of their classes to get a better sense of what they are like.

When sitting in on the class, there are a few things you want to pay special attention to, because they will tell you whether or not the trainer is actually as good as you thought.

First and foremost ask yourself the following questions: Do the dogs seem happy? Are they enjoying the class? How are they reacting to the trainer? And how many dogs are being taught at the same time?

If the group is smaller than six dogs, you are good to go. Moreover, if you and your family members are allowed to participate in the course, I highly recommend you do so, because you should never miss an opportunity to teach your dog and build mutual trust.

Make sure that the facilities are well maintained and that the location is a stimulating and healthy environment for your four legged friend to learn in.

Ideally, you would not want too many entrances and the gates and doors should be equipped with latches and/or locks. It is very important that the training is fun for your dog. He will have to want to come back.

The trainers should therefore reward good behavior but should never hit, abuse or use any other type of physical punishment to get results.

Another excellent way to find good trainers in your area is to contact various training and animal care organizations who will be able to guide you to a good obedience school.

One way or the other, do some research first, before you sit in on (or even sign up for) a class. After all, you probably want to get your friend the best training possible.
