Understanding Free Radicals, Getting Pregnant And Good Antioxidants

By Cheryl Santos

What exactly is a "Free Radical"? While most of us have heard the phrase, it is not necessarily apparent accurately what a free radical is. A free radical is a naturally occurring byproduct of our bodily functions. In extreme quantities they are detrimental and they can damage our cells and generate disease and age related deterioration. However, they are not all dangerous and our bodies do have need of some of them.

The truth is, free radicals are formed during the progression of oxidation in our bodies. Think about an apple that has been cut and is exposed to air. It can hastily turn brown. That is oxidation and in our bodies it is that process that causes free radicals.

Our bodies convey oxygen through our bloodstream where it is necessary for natural cell function. A problem occurs if the oxygen is missing in the number of electrons it holds. In order to keep the electrons stable, the molecules will lift electrons from other molecules which leaves a molecule with an unpaired electron which is in effect what a free radical is. It is a molecule with an unpaired electron.

Free radicals are formed by any number of numerous factors. The quality of the oxygen could be impaired because of environmental pollutants, cigarette smoke and more. Several physical functions can also play a part to inadequate oxygen quality. The food we eat, unnecessary exposure to radiation, both from the sun or from medical x-rays, environmental pollutants and more can affect the creation of free radicals. Anytime the body uses oxygen for any function free radicals are formed in the process.

Given that free radicals are so very unstable they can affect a great deal of destruction and disruption for the body. Science has shown that free radicals are a vast contributing feature to premature aging, the clogging of arteries and the development of many diseases.

Antioxidants work to reduce the effect the free radicals. The antioxidant will couple up with the unpaired electron or the free radical and alleviate it. However, in the course of that more free radicals are produced and you must always persist to replace the antioxidants. In other words, in order for antioxidants to be effective you must fully execute them into your food intake and consume them daily.

Antioxidants have been verified to be favorable to counter the effects of aging, the prevention of disease, and an aid to weight loss, insomnia, infertility and even more. All of nature's healthiest foods have high quantities of antioxidants and it is most beneficial to get your antioxidants from eating a nourishing diet.

Free radicals are a biological byproduct of living and we cannot do without them, however in disproportionate quantities they can produce many troubles. You can reduce free radical damage by consuming sufficient of natural occurring antioxidants.
