You Can Find Success With IVF Today

For anyone that wants to have a baby but is physically unable to do so, IVF, or in vitro fertilization, might be a very good option. In vitro fertilization first officially began in 1978 and many people have had success with IVF since then.

IVF is an infertility treatment that should only be used as a last resort when other methods have failed. It consists of hormonally controlling a woman's eggs during ovulation, taking female egg cells outside of the body, fertilizing them, and then inserting them into the female's uterus. It is a major treatment that a woman or couple should consider carefully before starting.

Most people that look into IVF are concerned over the rate of success. Rates are growing daily and are better than they were in recent years. Success rates are much higher for younger women, with the prime age being between 23 and 29. For women under the age of 35, there are both live birth and pregnancy rates over 40%. These numbers decline slightly for women between 35 and 37 with pregnancy being just over 30% and live births being just under 40%. Women between the ages of 41 and 42 are the oldest represented in statistical data with a pregnancy rate of 20.5% and a 12.6% live birth rate.
There have been many studies done to find what determines the success or failure of IVF. Although IVF can be very stressful due to the time, financial, and emotional conditions, a Swedish study showed that stress had no negative effects on fertilization. There is supportive evidence, although limited, finding that acupuncture may improve chances by increasing blood flow to the uterus and ovaries and is often used by fertility specialists as a form of patient therapy to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression as well. Smoking lowers the chances of successful IVF more than anything, and reduces the chances of live birth by 34% and increases the chance of miscarriage by 30%. Being overweight and having a body mass index (BMI) over 27 decreases chances of success. The prime BMI for IVF is between 19 and 30. Any success a woman has had with pregnancy or live birth before treatment begins increases chances. Finally, low caffeine and alcohol intake can increase the chances of success.

In vitro fertilization is a risky process, and there are various conditions that could occur. During ovarian stimulation, hyper-stimulation syndrome, or swollen and painful ovaries, occur in about 30% of patients. In more sever cases this can cause heartburn, gas, nausea, and even severe vomiting. There is also a risk of more than one embryo being transferred resulting in a multiple

There is also a risk of more than one embryo being transferred resulting in a multiple pregnancy, which can cause risks to the embryos and the mother if there is a premature delivery.

There are many complications that could occur once a woman becomes pregnant through IVF. Multiple births is the most common; it raises risks for pregnancy loss, low birth weights, premature births, obstetric complications, and even various long term neonatal problems. Some countries have placed limits on the number of embryos that are allowed to be transferred for this reason.

Some studies have shown that IVF poses birth defects to the baby as well, such as anorectal atresia, esophageal atresia, cleft lip, and septal heart disease. It is a very controversial topic and something you should think about before starting the fertilization process.

Even after considering the associated risks, IVF is wonderful for people having fertility problems. The overall process is about 6 weeks long per cycle and costs about $12,000. It is a big decision to go through the fertilization process, but success with IVF is worth the time and money.
