You need to make sure that you say what you mean and that you do what you say you are going to do. If you tell your children that you will be at a play of theirs, you need to make sure that you are there. It is what builds their trust and respect for their parents.
An important tip to consider in terms of parenting is to make sure that you listen to your children. This is very important because it can be easy to learn to ignore them due to the amount of gibberish and nonsensical banter that they can sometimes resort to. Your children are important and sometimes you need to read between the lines to understand what they are really saying. You can't read between the lines if you don't ever listen to them.

Sing to your children often when they are young. Small children enjoy hearing the sound of your voice and are not judgmental about the quality of your singing skills. Whether you are singing nursery rhymes or your favorite song, your child will enjoy the sounds of your singing even when you can't give them your undivided attention.

Try not to interfere with every little thing your child does. Children need to make mistakes, it's how they learn from them. If you're constantly hovering behind them protecting them from every little mistake, they'll never have a chance to learn. Let children do things for themselves and offer advice if they need it.

In order to be a good parent is important to promptly admit mistakes when you are wrong. Simply say "sorry" and let the child know that what you did was wrong. You might be his parent but that does not keep you from making mistakes. This will also build character in the child.
