What To Consider When Choosing A Landscaping Company

By Gary Knight

People who own homes know the value of a well-groomed lawn. Lovely yards can brighten the moods of everyone living in their corresponding houses, as well as those nearby. In fact, most neighbors will appreciate the time and effort that goes into good landscaping. However, the investment can be significant! You'll need to have a good chunk of money saved to have serious landscaping done. If you're ready to find the right landscaper, do the right thing and arm yourself with some important questions to ask before settling on a contractor.

You should ask for references from the company right off the bat. If the contractor is legitimate, they should be willing to provide them. Get in touch with the references and be sure to ask about price and quality of work, how professional the company's employees were, and if the project was done on time. Also, were they happy with the way their lawn turned out? Always ask the landscaping company directly for licensing, prior work examples, and logged testimonials from clients.

Be sure to inquire about the range of services provided. You can ask both the contractor and references you contact. Will the landscaping company provide any installation or lighting needed, or irrigate your yard if necessary? Will they get the permits needed for any expansion or placement issues? What about the actual design of the lawn? If you need to be your own designed, be sure to ask for suggestions since the landscapers are the experts.

Once you're satisfied with the landscaper's examples and references, discuss the company's process and vision. What does the landscaper suggest for your space? What are the steps they will take to complete the work? How long will each step take, and what is the estimated completion date for the entire project? All of these details should be hammered out well in advance of signing any paperwork.

Lastly, ask the landscapers about any chemicals, such as pesticides or fertilizers, they intend on using. What are the possible impacts of these chemicals? Has there been research done about any health side effects? A lot of professional landscapers now offer environmentally friendly options. Once you've learned all of the ins and outs of your prospective landscaper's process, you can feel confident about taking the next step. Discuss your budget and time expectations before you come to an agreement of terms.
