Best Way To Clean Jetted Spas

By Casey Ollson

When cleaning jetted hot tubs, remember that the job is actually very simple, but you will need the proper equipment. In addition, you will have to follow the steps in the correct order so that the jets in your spa are cleaned completely. You can buy the cleaning solution at a specialty store, or you can acquire common household cleaners from the grocery store. Usually a combination of bleach (or vinegar) and dishwashing powder will do the trick. To clean home spas, you do not necessarily need the professional fluid. The entire job is inexpensive and simple, provided you do it on a regular basis, preferably every four to six weeks.

After making sure you have the right supplies, take a look at the inside of your hot tub. Hot tubs can acquire a lot of stubborn stains and grime, so make a note of how bad the situation is before deciding on how much cleanser to use. In typical cases of moderate dirt, grime, and normal usage, you can get by with one cup of bleach mixed with spa water. The bleach alone should take care of the dirt as well as any build-up on the jets and mechanism, but if you want an extra-clean hot tub, toss one or two dishwasher tablets into the mix. Some people don't like to use bleach, so in that case just use vinegar instead. A cup or bleach or two cups of vinegar will do. Be sure to fill the spa with very hot water.

Mix the water around to get the cleaning fluid to dissolve completely and to help it mix evenly throughout the water. Spas fill at different rates depending on your pipe pressure, and of course the size of the tub.

Run the hot tub jets for about a quarter of an hour. Most jetted hot tubs have the same jet system and will disperse the cleaning agent with their natural cycle. After fifteen minutes, drain the tub and let it stand. This gives everything a chance to dry off and gives the cleaning agents time to settle.

To finish, you will need to refill the tub with cold water, run the jets again for 15 minutes or so, and then drain the tub again. After a quick drying out, you might want to wipe down the inside of the tub with a soft rag. That way, not only will the jets get clean, but you will have a sparkling, shiny spa that is ready for the next user. Spas are enjoyable, economical, and good for your health.
