Tips for Better Baby Skin Care

By Mihaela Wurt

Many parents assume that they do not need to do anything to keep their baby's skin clean and healthy. These parents seem to assume that a baby has an easier time of fighting off acne and other conditions than an adult does. After all, babies haven't hit puberty yet so they must not have to worry about puberty-related skin conditions. The honest truth is that babies do have very specific needs when it comes to caring for their skin.

This is the main reason that caring for your baby's skin is so important and it is important to put together a skin care routine early on. The sooner you start taking care of your baby's skin (and teaching him or her how important it is to take good care of his or her skin), the better able your child will be later on to fight acne and other issues. Read on to find tips and tricks for putting together a proper baby skin care routine.
Before you put the baby into the bath water make sure you test the water's temperature. Your baby's skin is incredibly sensitive and is easily burned by water that is too hot. Babies don't like very warm water; in fact, it isn't until much later in life that people start to enjoy hot water when they bathe. The best way to test your baby's bathwater is to test it with your elbow. You have very sensitive skin on your elbow so if your elbow feels like it is burning in the water, cool the water down! A baby's bathwater should be lukewarm at most.

It is important, when purchasing baby's skin care products, that you read the labels on them carefully. You want to stay away from products that include phthalates, parabens, added fragrances and dyes. These are all ingredients that have been known to cause things like rashes and other skin conditions. The last thing you want is to irritate your baby's skin when all you are trying to do is keep it clean! Gentle skin care products are the best skin care products. To make sure that the products you use are good, ask your pediatrician for skin care reccomendations.

A newborn baby needs specific types of skin care products. Don't assume that because something is safe for older infants (older than six months of age) or toddlers that it is safe for your newborn. Life outside the womb is much different than life inside the womb which means that it takes time for your newborn baby's skin to adjust. It takes time for your baby's skin to lose its sensitivity and develop the "thickness" that older babies and toddlers have. When you go shopping double check to make sure that the products are meant for newborns.

Two extra precautions that you should take to protect your baby against sun damage are hats and using umbrellas for shade. A cool, damp and soft cloth can be used to treat a sunburn that still manages to develop.

There are many different ways to care for your newborn's skin. The truth is that baby skin care does not need to be complicated or difficult. All you need is some common sense and the patience to choose the best products on the shelf and your baby's skin
