The Pull Of The Postcard Display Stand

By Martin Venning

Wherever we travel today there are very few of us who have ever resisted buying from a postcard display stand and posting our missive to people we know to say hello and let them know we are having a great time. Were you aware that a Deltiologist is a collector of postcards? Collecting postcards is considered to rank in the top three of the most popular hobbies. The gargantuan choice of topics on display is most likely the reason why hobbyists, whatever their passion may be, can find a postcard that is relevant to them. Postcard display stands greet us on our travels all around the globe.
Postcards are over a century old. The total number of places of interest, hobbies and significant events in our recent history ensure an overwhelming array to choose from. It is not just hobbyists who keep postcards, many of us hold on to them as reminders and keepsakes of countries to which we have travelled.

They are a tremendous archive of past events and a photographic catalogue of the 20th century, whether it is transport, landscapes, city centres - you can follow their progression through the last century with postcards.

I am not a hobbyist, but fond of antique postcards. They remind me fondly of an age we have moved on from. Tokens of love adorned with tender images and verse to evoke passion. Cheeky ones from our trips to the sea that make us howl with laughter with their innuendo. Monochrome images of locomotives sitting in Victorian railway stations; I can imagine the hustle and bustle around them. Holiday destinations when you were just a nipper and all the exciting adventures you had. Traditional Yuletide views of snow, roaring log fires and trees adorned with baubles and candy. Vistas of exotic locations you would love to travel to. Too many subjects to cover - something for everyone I expect.

All forms of art are interesting to me especial

All forms of art are interesting to me especially contemporary; fashionably up to date, witty and humorous. We meander slowly through the displays selecting carefully the ones we wish to send or keep. We can make them into collages to adorn our walls. Keep a supply too for those impromptu thoughts to family and acquaintances and isn't it exciting when you receive one through the post?

Through advances in technology we can now send virtual postcards, but nothing quite compares with making your choice from the postcard display stand and sending a smile to those we know wherever they may be.
