Alternative Family Holidays

By Ambrose Trevelyan

If you're getting bored of family holidays that revolve around going to the beach and not getting up to much else, perhaps you should think about doing something a bit more alternative the next time you go on holiday? There are plenty of ways to spice up your holiday and do something a little outside the norm. Some of these suggestions may initially appear a little costly, but you can always find great deals if you look around.
There's nothing wrong with spending a few days relaxing by the pool, but surely the whole point of getting away is to see something new? City breaks have long been thought of as child-unfriendly, but if approached in the right manner this doesn't have to be the case. Many children would be thrilled to see the sheer size of the Coliseum at Rome, let alone learning about what happened there thousands of years ago. More and more cultural institutions are finding ways of engaging younger people meaning that a holiday can be an educational and fun experience for all.

Something that for a long time has seen to be the reserve of the rich is skiing, but the price of a week on the slopes has fallen considerably over the years. Children who are athletic or sporty by nature will relish the chance to ski, and with a bit of luck will be tired enough in the evening to give you a bit of peace. Another pleasant side effect of a skiing holiday is that you're unlikely to gain all those extra pounds that you would if you were lazing about all day and eating far too much at night!

For a family holiday that is still adventurous if a little less exhaustive and cold, a safari is ideal. Children and adults alike will be stunned by the range of wildlife they come across during the safari, while mum and dad may be happy that they are still able to work on their tan. There are numerous wildlife reserves and accommodation types to suit all budgets making a holiday at a safari park a great decision for an alternative holiday.

While the traditional family holiday can be a safe bet, a week in the Serengeti or on the Alps can be unforgettable. And there's no reason why if you're looking for something alternative you can't come up with plenty of other ideas. From camping to caving and everything else, there's plenty for families who want to try something a little different.
