Baby Headbands: Everything you need to know before buying

By Kristina Sexton

New moms have lots to worry about. One of their worries should not be which baby headbands should she choose for her little girl. However, some common questions still exist: Just how do i know which size I want? Which colors am i going to really use? How do I fasten a bow or flower clip to the headband? Do I need to pay more to really make it "interchangeable?"

For a mom who already has girls, most of us know the answers to these questions, but for a first time mom-to-be, or even a mom of all boys, the answers are not as clear.

Choosing the appropriate size for your baby headbands and beanies is one of the most important things to consider. Baby headbands come in a variety of widths as well as lengths and styles.

There are crochet headbands, nylon headbands, velvet headbands, and other variations of these. The most popular type of baby headbands are crochet headbands.

Typically crochet headbands are advertised in terms of width. 1.5" and 2.75" and 3" crochet headbands describe the width of the headband and are appropriate for all ages. Width is solely a matter of preference. Our best suggestion is to view photos of children wearing both sizes to decide which style you prefer for your own child. The 5" and 6" baby headbands are typically worn by older girls and adults. The 1.5", 2.75" and 3" width baby headbands are typically used for small girls and babies.
You should consider the length of the baby headbands next. For a mom who hasn't purchased crochet headbands before this can be confusing because many companies advertise for example crochet headbands that are made to fit infants through adults. The confusion exists because infant baby headbands typically measure about 4.5" to 5" long, while standard crochet headbands measure 5.5" to 6.5" long. So do you really need to purchase two separate sizes? The answer: No! But why, you might ask. Both headband sizes are designed so that the circumference of a newborn's head is greater than the circumference of the headband when stretched. When put on the child, they will both stretch around her head. Traditional baby headbands like crochet headbands will fit newborns all the way up to adults, while infant baby headbands will only fit little girls under one year.

Another dilemma the buyer faces is color selection. How many colors should you purchase? Unfortunately, there is no straightforward answer to this question. The answer varies from person to person. However, the essential colors used most often are white, all colors of pink, red, chocolate brown and black. Other colors come in useful when accessorizing that special outfit and help to make her hair accessories look custom-made. Really, the colors you choose are a personal preference and depend on how often you plan on having your child wear headbands and hair bows. If you are a mommy who doesn't walk around the block without putting a bow on your child (guilty here), then you will probably want a larger color selection in addition to purchasing extra of the basic colors, particularly white. However, if you are a mommy who uses them once a month, headbands can be purchased to match only those special outfits.

You don't know how to attach a bow to a crochet headband? Don't be embarrassed! You are not alone. One of the most common questions we receive is: how do I attach a hair bow or flower clip to my baby headband? It is surprisingly effortless and simple. The crochet headbands are made of woven material that contains holes. By weaving the barrette in and back out of the material, just like you would a needle through fabric, the bow may be attached without any additional embellishments.

We recommend alligator clips for attaching bows to baby headbands; however, almost any clip can be woven through the material if done carefully t

Many bow makers place grosgrain ribbon over the seam, thus making it "interchangeable". Though this looks nice, if you weave your girl's bow over the seam, it won't be visible even though the headband is worn and the ribbon is thus, completely unnecessary. However, you may prefer to wrap the ribbon around the seam yourself or pay a little extra to purchase them pre-wrapped.

How do you know which of the baby headbands is right for your daughter? Do you go with 1.5" crochet headbands or a nylon headband? How will these look on your little girl? There are quite a range of prices for these accessories, from less than $0.50 each to over $30. You might ask, what's the difference between the two? Usually a lot of mark up from retailers. At The Hair Bow Company we can help you answer all of these questions. Purchasing crochet hair accessories for your baby girl can be a daunting and expensive task. However, it doesn't have to be.
