Cats, Kittens Vets

By Bob Jenkins

From the time that cats are Kittens, they need to go to the veterinarian. to get their shots, detect problems and take care of any physical exams that are needed. Vets will give your kitten a physical exam, booster shots, a rabies shot, FeLV test and fecal analysis, In addition, they will give the kitten an ear flush, worming medication and any other drops or drugs necessary.

Kittens and Cats can't tell you how they're feeling so you need a good veterinarian. By getting regular checkups with the vet, problems can be detected faster. Things as simple as weight maintenance is something that a checkup will detect reductions. Warning signs can be as little as a change in weight and levels of activity.

Another thing that should be handled when a kitten is about six weeks old. Vaccines for Calicivrus combined with feline distemper and herpesvirus. Rabies vaccine should be administered when a kitten is about 16 weeks old. As well, kittens should also get feline leukemia virus vaccine and other vaccines for ringworm, Chlamydia and bordetella.

As your kitten matures, make sure that they meet a lot of different people so that they become socialized. This not only makes them friendly around people, but makes it easier to take them to the vet. Most cats dislike going to the vet for a couple of reasons. First, most cats dislike car rides because they aren't used to them.

You can cut down on the anxiety of your cat by taking them for car rides (in their carrier) periodically where they don't end up at the vet's office. Second, and this is harder to help reduce, is the anxiety your cat experiences when they actually have to go to the vet's office. The unfamiliar smells and sounds make for an anxiety ridden trip for your cat. Have some treats for the cat at the ready when they get home to reassure them.

Both cats and kittens can suffer from parasites that need to be removed. Vets usually give cats dewormers which are designed to rid specific intestinal parasites. Vets can also give you things to take care of external parasites like fleas which strong like topical ointments that are for cats with serious rashes or scratch wounds.

Cats also need to be neutered which will make your cat less aggressive and friendlier. It is a recommended procedure that is usually performed when the cat is six months of age, but it can also be performed after that. Six months of age is considered good because the risks to the cat are less. Kittens should see the vet about once a month for checkups and vaccines. An adult cat should have a checkup once a year, and older cats should be examined about every three months or so.

Cats and kittens are usually happy and carefree, but if your pet displays any odd symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, respiratory issues, seizures, pale gums or suspicious lumps or non-stop itching, you should contact your vet and make an appointment. Cats get sick faster and their conditions can worsen faster, so if you see something happening, don't waste time.
