Steel buildings can be used for office, storage or living space. This material is used in construction of these places because it offers iron cladding or a strong structure. These structures were widely used during World War II and during the twentieth century. As the material became more accessible, these structures became more popular. They are considered cost efficient and are typically easy to build and maintain. Developments in materials, computer technology and design have contributed to the popularity of these units.

Steel buildings are known for having high quality, strength and durability. They are favorable financially as well. Maintenance is inexpensive and the materials needed to build these structures are not costly. These units are considered environmentally friendly and are able to resist termites. There are some disadvantages with these units. Corrosion can impact the materials used to build the framework, particularly the iron and steel parts. If this occurs and is not treated, it can lead to more structural problems down the line. Heat conductivity may also be an issue, depending on the purpose and location of the building. This material can conduct up to 300 times more heat than wood.

Not all of these units are made the same. The two main features include arch and straight-walled. These features indicate the shape of the exterior. Arches are less expensive than straight-walled structures. They are widely used in the agricultural industry. Straight-walled structures allow for more working space within a facility. They are more commonplace and usually blend in with surrounding building architecture. Industrial and commercial facilities are often straight-walled.

Two other structural forms: clear and multiple spans. Span is associated with the interior framework of a building. Clear spans use support beams overhead for support. This eliminates the need for support columns. These spans are more practical for facilities, such as arenas and aircraft hangers, that do not want obstructions in their space.

These units have developed with time, especially in terms of manufacturing. These buildings, small and large, are prefabricated. This simplifies the assembly process. Virtually anybody can construct these structures. Larger buildings; however, require more work to put together. In fact, the larger the unit is, the more difficult it can be to construct and the more important safety and accuracy are.

The essential features of these buildings: bending members, combined-force members, compression members and connections. Connections, as their name suggests, put together all of the parts of the structure, specifically the members. Each member has its own purpose and is installed in a different place. When these pieces are put together, they should function as one unit. Builders should read instructions thoroughly before constructing these units.
