When Parents Age

By Willie Green

This is the day you thought would never happen. It's the reversal of your roles in life. You're trying to make decisions for yourself and your Aging Parent. You have to make decisions for everyone's good. How can you handle that, plus make everyone happy? You've got a family, a partner, and a career. You want to balance everything to keep everyone happy and life as normal as possible. Backtrack right now! Those phone calls and weekly visits aren't really enough at this point. You should give real care and attention to your parents.

You have to make sure they eat their meals on time, take their medicines, and use their money wisely. You have siblings that think Assisted Living or Nursing Facilities are awful and they don't want to put Mom or Dad in one even though they also don't want to help out. How can you manage everything? How can you solve this, while keeping everyone happy?

Start with their doctor. Talk to the doctor about your parent's health. You can also check into the hospital that their health care is associated with. Elder care groups are found in every hospital. The doctors and the medical coverage group will be able to help you decide on the type of help and living style that would be best for your parents.

The might not require more than an aide who'll visit once or twice a day to assist in showering, dressing, meals, and medication. Their health may need more than that and the visiting nurse or doctor's office is the place to apply the concern. The most important thing to ensure is your parents' safety. If safety is not at the level necessary, keep pushing until you get the help you need.

It would be a while before you can uncover everything for your parents' care, but it'll all be worth it. Your parents should know what's going on beforehand.

What your parents need is you. So spend some quality time with them and make them happy moments. Ask them over regularly.
