Fun Facts About Babies You Might Not Have Heard

By Silva Carvalho

Growing up is something that, if we're being honest, starts at conception. In one moment there is nothing more than a few cells and almost immediately vital organs are being built. Only nine months are needed to turn those few cells into a real baby that lives outside of his or her mother. Personalities and decisions begin being made almost immediately after birth. You probably already know a little bit about babies-things like diaper changes and how long it takes babies to begin speaking are pretty common knowledge. Here are some facts about babies and childhood development that you might not know.

Did you know already that babies are not very good at telling colors apart? It will take some time after a baby is born for his eyes to finish maturing and for the synapses between them and his brain to be complete. This is why the very best colors that you can use for a baby's room or toys are bright primary colors. Bold and bright colors like reds and greens and blues or even white and black are the easiest colors for babies to see. It is difficult for a baby to tell the difference between softer or more pastel shades.

This is often the motivation behind a baby's toy preferences. What this means is that all of the black and white stuff that you think of as ugly is actually better for your baby's eyesight and brain development than the more traditional and popular pastel based decorations and toys.

Even while they are in utero, babies can identify music. By the thirty fourth week of development in the womb a baby can hear and identify songs. That means that this happens more than a month before the baby is born! Sometimes the babies will even "dance" to different beats. Your baby has definite tastes and preferences even before he is born! Isn't that amazing?

While the rest of the baby's vital organs continue to develop after birth, the tail has usually long since disappeared into the rest of the baby's body by the time it is born. This is not that different from the way a tadpole grows to be a frog. Not everyone completely outgrows their tails-some people are born with tails that are still partially intact. There are two options available to you if your baby is born with his tail still intact: waiting and hoping that it goes away or having it removed via surgery.
