How To Put Up Coving

By Darren Bent

Coving is a popular decorative item that many people fit to the walls or ceilings of their home. It is important that you choose the right coving for the job as there are several types available. For instance, if you go for a plaster coving, this will look fantastic but it can be expensive. You can also get paper-coated plaster coving, which is more cost effective but which needs to be painted. For the cheapest coving option, you should look at the polystyrene options available.
Once you are certain you've got the right coving, you should mark out where it's going to go on your walls. Do this by using a small block of coving so you can work out how far it will extend down the wall and onto the ceiling. Use a pencil to mark it out at regular intervals along the wall. Then you should use a spirit level to connect the marks so you have a continuous, straight line that will make it clear where it needs to go.

You then need to make sure the coving is prepared before it goes on the walls. One thing you should do is cut the end pieces so they will slot together at the end of the wall. Use a fine-toothed saw to cut them to an angle of 45 degrees. If possible, you should use long lengths of coving so that there are fewer visible joins on the wall, and also score the wall so that it will accept the adhesive better.

Now you need to apply the adhesive to the coving in an even layer. You can do this by using a knife. You need to make sure that all the areas of the coving that will be in contact with the wall and ceiling are covered

Then you should line up the coving with the pencil markings you made earlier so you can apply it to the wall. Push it down gently so that it sticks without moving out of place.

One final thing to do so that the long pieces of coving don't sag in the middle is to secure them. You can do this while the adhesive is drying by using small nails. Once the adhesive has dried and the coving is as secure as possible, you will be able to remove these and then fill in the holes so that the evidence won't be visible. Then remove any excess adhesive by using a damp cloth or paintbrush around the edges of the coving.
