Modern Furniture In The Contemporary World Today

By Adriana Noton

The importance is to know what makes modern furniture what it is. It should not be taken as meaning contemporary. It has a particular styling and design which qualifies it as modern. It does have a place in the contemporary world, but it has to have the elements which classify it as such.

The two periods, Contemporary and Modern, should not be confused. This is the same for furniture. To add to the confusion, though, this can also be contemporary as there are many recapturing of this period in the twenty first century. The point, however, is that there is a criteria by which it need to be judge to place it within that period.

The way to recognize it is to look at the line, shape, color and materials which were used. This type of furniture has clean lines and makes use of basic shapes such as the square, the circle and the rectangle. The last few years have seen a revival in this type of design. It is able to fit together perfectly and, hence, it makes for very practical and stylish decor.
The lines are, however, not only square and round, but include curves as well. The curves are used in sofas, chairs, tables and all parts of the home. The idea was based in affordability and functionality. Included in this time period was the use of the materials. They opted for acrylic, plywood and vinyl (instead of leather). The legs of chairs and stools were made from tubular metal (chrome) in particular and a lot of the seating and tables were also presented in clear acrylic.

It can especially be recognized by the use of neutral colors such as black, white and gray with primary colors and secondary colors interspersed. One other aspect of this type of chairs, tables and sofas are that they are also modular (including the some accessories). The most important aspect, though, is that it encapsulates the period of the fifties and the sixties.

Le Corbusier, Josef Hoffman, Arne Jacobsen and Eero Aarnio and others, were forerunners of these designs. They have been highly trained designers and applied their design skills in this field to leave us with a legacy of excellence. Each of these designers was responsible for the styles which can also be seen today. There is Le Corbusier's square chair with its chrome casing and Josef Hoffman's Kubus styled chairs.

The swan chairs can be attributed to Arne Jacobsen and Eero Aarnio was responsible for the ball chair which was also interpreted into a hanging transparent ball. These designers did well in the aesthetics of their designs as well as creating very comfortable seating and stylish modern furniture Toronto for most homes.

Their designs not only appealed to the senses but it was also ergonomically well-suited. The interpretations can only be exact if it is to capture that essence. It is especially very relevant as in the case of Le Corbusier who used the golden ratio in his designs.
