Pros and Cons of Nursery Trees vs. Spaded Trees

By Adam Ciboch

Whether you choose spaded trees or nursery trees, there are both positive and negative aspects to consider. Trees that are grown in nurseries are generally easier to transport because they have usually been subject to the process of root pruning. If the value of the tree exceeds the cost of transporting it or if it would otherwise be lost, transplanting with a tree spade may be more costly initially but can be ultimately successful.

Nursery trees have the advantage of being subjected to root pruning, which aids in the growth of the tree's most adaptable roots and contributes to the ultimate health and minimal stress for the tree. At the same time, moving and transplanting large trees from one location to another via a tree spade, saves labor, planting time and years of maintenance on a young tree. Mower damage, which sometimes occurs with smaller or younger trees, is usually avoided when a tree spade is utilized.

Nursery-grown trees are known for denser root systems, but they are usually not as extensive as field-grown trees. They are trees, which have been nurtured for at least two years under "nursery conditions." While transplanting these type of trees, handling is best accomplished by a ball-and-burlap method, which reduces the danger of injury. This particularly applies to small trees with well-developed root systems. The roots must have room to develop and should never be either crowded or pruned in order to fit into a pre-designated hole.

Provided that the ground is not frozen, by using a tree spade many trees can be relocated at any time of the year. The cooler months of the year, particularly in early spring and fall, are conducive to transplanting firs, maples and spruce trees. Tree spades are often utilized by commercial nurseries to lift large trees out of the soil for retail sales or compact storage.

Spades are utilized by arborists and landscape companies for the purpose of planting large trees that have been moved from elsewhere or have been grown in nurseries. An "instant landscape" is created when professionals dig up and transplant large trees from one location to the other. A general understanding of how tree spades work and the location in which they will be operated is important, and there are many different types of tree spades to choose from.
