Successfully Entertaining The Kids In London

By Oliver Pless

Summer holidays have arrived and you are now wondering how to entertain the children for the next 6 weeks. A trip to the capital can alleviate some of the holiday's boredom and entertain the whole family. Whether it is a trip to the park, museum or theatre London has everything to offer and all within easy reach of your accommodation. London nights will be short as the days will be long and full of fun.

With many of the London museums now offering free entry where better to start your visit to the capital. If you are after dinosaurs, Egyptian mummies, animals and egg collections then the Natural History Museum is an excellent place to take your children. On the other hand if your children are into space, how things work and the world around them then the Science Museum, packed full of audience participation and experiments, is the ideal place for them. During the summer holidays many museums offer the perfect solution to long London nights with sleepovers in the museums, a great way to see the museum in a different light. Amongst the other London museums that children may enjoy are the National Maritime Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Imperial War Museum and the Museum of London. All London museums offer special summer holiday exhibits and themes that make a trip to the museum fun as well as educational.

If you are looking to add a bit of culture to your break then why not try one of the many galleries. Most of the London galleries offer special holiday activities for children, including quizzes about the art, practical art sessions and exhibitions aimed at the younger audience. The National Gallery, Tate Modern and Tate Britain are all very child friendly. The Tate Britain gallery offers regular art trolley sessions where budding young artists can take art materials into the gallery to make their own version of the masterpieces hanging on the walls, these are then displayed in a special area within the gallery.

A great way to see all the sights of London is to take a tour on an open top bus. With tickets available for single days or multi days you can make the most of your time in London. The many tour routes will take you past all the main attractions including, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Downing Street, St Pauls Cathedral, the financial district in the City and Canary Wharf. The great advantage of a bus ticket is that once valid you can get on and off the bus at as many stops as you wish. The London Eye offers a completely different view of the city and when the sky is clear you can see the whole of London and all the main buildings and sights.

If you feel the need to let your children have a run around to wear off some of their energy London has many parks that they will find adorable. Regents Park is not only home to a great green area within the city but is also home to London Zoo, which offers many daily activities for children throughout the summer holidays. Other parks such as St James Park, near to Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Battersea Park and Green Park offer wide open green spaces to walk, kick a ball around, play on one of the many adventure play areas or even to just relax with a picnic.

For those long London nights with the children why not take them to see a show in one of the many London theatres. Shows that are currently running and suitable for children include Shrek the musical, Billy Eliot, Oliver, the Lion King and the Wizard of Oz. Many of the London theatres offer matinee performances throughout the summer holidays so that children can enjoy the wonder of the theatre without getting over tired from a late night.

Throughout the summer holidays the BBC Proms will be running many events all over London that are aimed at getting children involved in music. One of the most famous proms events is proms in the park, an opportunity to see the last night of the proms live from Hyde Park. Throughout the proms event family friendly proms plus events will be running before the main evening performance giving families the opportunity to learn more about the music and culture behind the evening's main performance.

In all a short break to London can offer you and your children a great fun learning experience without them realising they are learning at all. Whether you wish to explore the capital, see all the sights, relax in a park or learn amazing facts in the museums London has it all to offer. With so many activities on offer throughout the day in London nights will be filled with happy memories and sleeping children.
