Assisted Living Data Shows the Hidden Secrets of Elder Care

By Fred Born

Data does not lie and the data is available and very easy to get to. The data I am referring to is assisted living facility violation data. These data reports are compiled by the department of aging and medicare and offer insights on which assisted livings to go to and which ones to stay away from. Unfortunately many assisted livings are too expensive for the kids budgets that must place their parent in a facility. In some cases even if the data says some bad stuff the elderly must be placed in a less than ideal elder care facility.
Rather then get bogged down in how nice the new assisted living facility looks like it is important to consider other details such as care worker to resident ratio. A report from the department of aging will shed some light on this subject as past history of care worker turnover and resident to care worker ratio is disclosed. Usually with high turnover means the facility is often left with not enough care workers to staff the place. This situation breeds neglect and abuse of the elderly and that means the shopper should continue shopping other facilities.

Chances are that none of the elder care facilities will be perfect but each will have their own set of issues. Some issues are not a huge deal while others raise a higher red flag. Take for instance an infraction involving a fire alarm emergency test where it took 7 minutes to get everyone out of the building instead of 5 minutes. Maybe during the fire alarm there was a hold up because one of the residents had just become disabled to the point that she needed help getting in her wheelchair.

The occasional fire test mishap at an elder care facility is not a huge issue compared to a high resident to care worker ratio. With a low number of staff the care workers get stressed and this leads to the residents getting stressed and taking it out on the care workers for not being there for them. Care workers eventually snap and the violent ones may fail to feed some of them out of revenge. There are also situations where an elderly person that needs round the clock care is left soiled nightly in their clothes until the morning or afternoon.

Finally an assisted living facility can be a good place to leave a parent provided that there are good care workers on staff and the resident receives consistent visits from family. If visits are not had and the care workers are low quality an assisted living facility is more like a jail and nothing like a place to enjoy friends and a feeling of home. Many elderly left in these bad conditions fade off into death with little joy left to speak of.
