Britain and its Isles

By Harvey Powers

There is no more relaxing and luxurious way to explore Great Britain and its islands than with one of the cruise deals now available.

Britain and its islands have almost 8,000 miles of coastline, over half of which is in Scotland, much longer in proportion to its land mass than many similarly sized countries.

The coast of Britain includes some of the wildest and most beautiful regions of the UK. Entire stretches of the coast are uninhabited, other than by seabirds and marine life.

At the northernmost point of the UK, a cruise around the Scottish islands is breathtaking, not only for the rugged views but for the variety of wildlife. Basking sharks, dolphins, porpoises and whales can be seen in the waters around the hundreds of small islands which make up Scotland. Seabirds nest on the cliffs while the beaches and estuaries are home to waterfowl and waders.

The cities of Glasgow and Inverness give a glimpse of their historic past with period architecture, while Edinburgh has its magnificent castle and elegant shops.

Ports of call in Ireland include Dublin and its many traditional pubs set against the picturesque Wicklow Hills, Belfast with its historic buildings, and the stunning Giant's Causeway on the coast of county Antrim.

The Channel Islands which lie at the southernmost point have a gentle climate, and a slow pace reminiscent of a past era. Lying close to France, there is a strong French influence on culture and cuisine.

Nowhere in Britain is far from the coast and passengers on a UK cruise can experience many places of interest close to the ports of call. Snowdonia and the historic castles of Conwy, Caernarfon and Dolwyddelan are very close to Holyhead in Wales, while cruises from Southampton often include tours of Stonehenge and the cathedral towns of Salisbury and Winchester.
