Buying Your Child's First Bed

By Ruth Smith

Moving your toddler from that crib to a totally new cot of his own can be a very challenging transition. And to make the entire process more difficult, there is no definite time for this kind of change. Every child is different, some are ready to move on to toddler beds at a very early age while some still struggle with sleeping outside their cribs even well into the toddler stage. So to make that transition easier for you and your children, here are a few tips to help you out during this very important stage.

Although you can always buy ahead of time, it is always recommended that parents buy a toddler's cot when they see cues of their little one's getting ready to move out of that crib and into a new bed. When your children start climbing over the railings, it should be a clear enough signal to make that transition.
Another very clear sign is when you toddler starts outgrowing his or her crib. You would not want her/him to sleep uncomfortably in that crib. So instead of buying a new crib, get them a toddler bed instead.

For some parents, the change may be brought about by the arrival of a new baby. In this case, try to move your children out from the crib several weeks or even months before you are due for conception. This will avoid him or her from feeling pushed out of his territory just because of the arrival of a new baby.

Remember, the transition will always be difficult for your child. So take it slow and easy. Give them time and space to warm up to their new sleeping area. You can actually make the feel of the new cot more familiar by simply placing them in the exact same place where you used to put his or her crib. Aside from that, you can bring your toddler along with you as you shop the crib upgrade. This way, they can pick the designs they like so will actually look forward to using it.

Some children can go through the transition without any problems at all. However, there are a number of toddlers who can get overly attached to their cots and refuse to move at all. So again, do not be too hard on your little ones. Give them as much time as they need. But be firm on that decision to move them out of their cot. If possible, take out that crib or hide it in the attic so they'll have nothing to come back to again.

And lastly, always put safety first. Make sure that you install proper railings to keep them from falling out during their sleep. Follow the same precautions that you used when using beddings and sheets in your child's cot. Make sure that they are fastened securely to prevent them from smothering your little ones during sleep.
