The Function And Design Of Orangeries

By John Mills

Orangeries have been around for centuries and were originally designed to enable the owner to grow citrus fruit all year around, even in cold climates. Constructed out of stone or steel and glass, they were considered a luxury and only the wealthy were building them. Nowadays, they are more affordable and being used as living areas in many homes.

The orangery is known for the amount of glass used in construction. No longer just for growing oranges, they are now an attractive way to add on a home when more room is needed. They are efficient and affordable.
Using double glazing for all the glass in the structure ensures that the room retains the maximum amount of heat, while allowing in the natural light. Traditional methods used while extending a house would mean that you can get the lantern roof specific to the orangery, but still have brick walls and regular windows, keeping your home secure, but still allowing you to feel like you are outdoors, even on the coldest, wettest day while remaining warm and dry.

Many designs incorporate the use of glass panels where walls should be. Also double glazed, this gives the atrium feeling to the room and allows enjoyment of the garden at the same time. Sliding doors will open the room up to the garden making it ideal for summer entertaining or even just family living.

Having year round use of your pool is now possible. Building a glass atrium around the heated pool means that when winter arrives and the doors are closed, you could still be swimming. Having direct access to the pool without having to venture into the snow will enable you to enjoy your swimming pool all the time. When summer comes around again, the doors are opened and the pool is back to being outside and part of the garden.

Growers of rare and beautiful flowers choose a greenhouse.

Well insulated because due to the double glazing as well as good-looking, orangeries are individually designed to suit your needs. Making more space for a growing family by expanding the living room or the kitchen is not just four walls and a ceiling. Using the expanse of glass to include your garden in your home is something you will enjoy for many years as your family grows.
