Hoi An The Hidden Gem of Vietnam

By Jose Mauricio Maurette

There are certain towns that should not be missed if you are having Vietnam tours. In a country with such a huge area to cover and so much to offer in terms of sightseeing and culture; to hit the mark with the ideal itinerary can be a bit stressing sometimes especially when you only have few days for your holidays.

Hoi An situated in Central Vietnam is most likely the most charming fishing village in the whole of the country. It is hard to find places which are not invaded herds by of tourists and then end up losing their local charm. Hoi An is one of those few towns that hasn't faded after tourism reached Vietnam.

Hoi An's old town is basically just three main streets parallel to the river. There is a boardwalk area on one of the islands in the river as well, which seem to be a bit more touristy than the rest of the town. The old town is dominated by French colonial buildings often framed by beautiful flowers and lanterns.

Hoi An is a town to walk around and enjoy the hectic life of the food markets an try some exquisite local dishes that can only be found in Hoi An. There is no much traffic compared to the rest of Vietnam and the outskirts of Hoi An itself. You can also rent a bicycle to ride around the town or even venture to the nearby beaches only 2 miles away.

Interestingly and debatable is that two of the most famous local dishes -- White Rose dumplings and Cao Lao -- are said to get their unique qualities due to the water used that comes from a single well in Hoi An and the ash from a particular tree that grows only in Hoi An.

Additionally, the White Rose dumplings recipe is a secret, held by one family in Hoi An who supplies all the restaurants in town. White Rose dumplings do have a very light, soft rice paper that surrounds a shrimp filing and a garlic rice wine vinegar dipping sauce. The White Rose has become a favourite Vietnamese dish so far. Fresh shrimp and nice light rice paper? Hard not to love.

If one morning you get up early enough to check out the local market to see the fishing boats come in. When the sun start rising at around 5am, the town's serenity and quietness is broken. The fish market erupts in chaos as small boats with baskets of fish compete for space to unload.

Though located inland a bit on the river, Hoi An is close to the beach as well, and you can rent some bikes and head out four kilometres for a day at the beach. It is like the perfect way to finish the day and cool off a bit the high temperatures that regularly reach the 35 Celsius.
