How to Preserve Photos and Books Through Scanning

When you figure out how to scan old photographs & books for preservation you can preserve these items around for many years. They can save on the wear and tear and deterioration from handling and keep them from being destroyed. It can also be used to make the information much easier to get to since you can have it electronically.

This is one of the easiest methods in creating a database so the information can be searched and easily accessed and works well with both types of information. It can be good for those looking up the family tress, or just make the information in books easier to get to while protecting them from damage through use.
The different scanners have different uses to getting these digital. The flatbed scanner is the most common, and this is built like a small photocopier. It generally has a scannable area the size of a piece of paper of larger. This may crush books and break the spine if you are not careful. There are also photo scanners that has the benefit of doing negatives and slides. Other types can do photographs in general, but this is the way to go to get the other forms of pictures electronically scanned, and they include software to clean up the older photos as well.

A sheet feed allows one sheet at a time to be added into it, but it is considerably smaller than a flatbed. The portable one is best for books that you do not want to be damaged, since this will roll down the page instead of having to place the book open on the surface, but the photo quality is not all that good. Take what you are doing into consideration and what you are saving when choosing the scanner that will work the best for you.

Once you have the image in the computer, it will save it in the location that you specify in a JPEG or BMP format. These are the easiest ways for other people to see them, and from there you can store them on a photo sharing site for others to enjoy, add them to a blog, or save them to a disk.

Once you have the images, don't forget to protect the originals either. Since you are dong this to keep the items in good shape, be sure to store them where they ill not suffer further damage. This way if the electronic ones become lost or corrupted, you can re-add them electronically as you need to and the originals are in good enough shape to be able to do this.
