PCIP California Rates Just Cut!

By Tim Thompson

California has just reduced the rates that people pay for the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan California (PCIP California) by up to 24%. The federal government pays most of the cost for this program, which was created as part of the Health Care Reform Bill last spring, and it provides a health insurance option for people that have been denied regular health insurance due to health conditions. The purpose of the PCIP California plan is to provide a safety net insurance plan for uninsured Californians.

The rate reduction will take effect on Oct 1st, and the hope is that this will encourage more uninsured people to enroll in the plan. The current 3500 pre-existing condition insurance plan California subscribers will get 8% to 24% rate cuts depending upon their age and where they live.

A recent 24 year old PCIP California enrollee of mine, Darren, will get a premium savings of 17.6%, bringing his monthly cost down from $181 to $149. Darren's PCIP plan gives him a $1500 deductible, $25 office visit copays, and a maximum out of pocket of $2500 in his PCIP PPO plan.

For uninsured people, the California PCIP is a good option because it provides a rich set of benefits at a price point below what the major insurance companies would charge for a plan with these benefits.

For pregnant women that don't have health insurance, the pre-existing condition insurance plan California can be especially attractive. When compared against all the regular individual maternity health insurance plans, the PCIP California plan has the 3rd lowest out of pocket costs, behind only the Kaiser Permanente options. The PCIP easily beats the best maternity health insurance plans that Anthem Blue Cross, Health Net, and Blue Shield of California have to offer.
