The Truth About Organic Farming

By Matt Pender

Natural farming practices have been in existence for ages but with the rise of the industrial age, the use of time saving implements including chemicals were introduced into the system. Lately, many growers have discovered the need to make use of more natural techniques in growing their crops and this method is what is known as organic farming.

However in the past few years it has become obvious that this method of cultivation is more than just a trend. The demand for organic products has increased a lot since the 1980s and the 1990s that increase was around 20 to 30 percent per year.
Some of those who got in on this form of farming did so because they were looking for a means of spreading the risk factor associated with their business and needed to diversify. However there were a lot more who decided to concentrate wholly on growing crops through natural means.

There are several means which are used in natural crop cultivation and they are all geared towards environmental protection. These include methods that preserve soil quality and reduce erosion such as mulching on the soil surface, crop rotation and using green manure. All these provide good soil structure without causing harm or damage.

The major problem to consumers of crops that were farmed using modern intensive agricultural practices that involve the use of artificial fertilizers and herbicides is that these chemicals tend to remain in the soil and get into the crops which are then ingested as food. Several health problems have been traced to these chemicals.

The benefits of cultivating crops in an organic manner are numerous and a lot of growers are beginning to discover that. It is a form of farming that is very profitable because the farmer makes use of what is already available and has little need to spend money. The demand is high and it leaves the soil healthier and the water cleaner.
