The Top End is the term affectionately given to the Northerly area of the Northern Territory of Australia. It is a hot, tropical area which also may include some dry and dusty areas to the south, west and east. The area is especially suited to campervan hire Australiatravel due to the long distances between cities.
If you use Darwin as a base, there are plenty of places to explore locally, then bunk down in one of the many caravan parks in and around Darwin. A nightfall drink at the classic Darwin Yacht Club is a total must as is the local fish feeding where the fish are literally feeding in the water around your feet. If you avoid the high end accommodation and relish the adaptability of your campervan, you'll find yourself with more money to spend on activities.
While Darwin is tropical, an hours drive south will place you in dry, tough country. It is always advised to travel with masses of water - and I mean heaps with a capital P. Load up your camper and do not be caught short.
There are tons of roadside stops where there are basic bush toilets and usually a BBQ. If you gather up some firewood during the day, you will be prepared for a traditional style Aussie BBQ in the evening. There are usually fellow travellers to be found at these roadside stops and firm friendships are sometimes forged over a communal meal and shared stories, washed down with liberal quantities of favorite drinks.
Your campervan will be a welcome sanctuary for a sound sleep prior to setting off again the next day. There are always interesting things to see when travelling in the Top End, like tall, brown anthills that dot the landscape interspersed with the strange tropical oasis, like Matarnaka Springs. Again, travelling by campervan gives you the choice of staying a week or a day and ultimately providing maximum flexibility for your vacation.
