Welsh flower power: RHS Cardiff goes down a storm

By Francis Halle

It seems like only yesterday, but it was back in April that Bute Park, set within the beautiful parklands of Cardiff Castle, played host to the RHS Cardiff Flower Show for the seventh consecutive year.

Between 8 and 10 April this year, the weather gave Cardiff's RHS Flower show a spectacularly warm welcome, attracting over 24,000 visitors from all over Wales and across the border. Comprising of eight show gardens, a schools wheelbarrow competition and the launch of the Welsh Warrior daffodil variety.
Having welcomed Cardiff's RHS Flower Show with warm weather and clear skies from 8-10 April, the city attracted over 24,000 visitors from all across Wales, England, Scotland, and much, much further afield. This year's show showcased a total of eight fantastic gardens, an interactive allotment created and presented by Radio 2′s Allotment Doc, Terry Walton, as well as a wheelbarrow contest for schools, a Plant Plaza, and two floral marquees.

Out of the eight show gardens this year, all were awarded a much-coveted RHS medal to applaud their horticultural creativity and skill. Gaynor Witchard, who worked in association with Alfresco Landscape & Garden, brought her 'West Meets East' garden to the weekend, and was happily awarded the sought-after accolade of Best in Show.

As the name suggests, the display was a unique mixture of east and west horticultural influences, with the intricacy and beauty of Japanese gardens being merged with the west's fine landscaping ability to create one of the most serene gardens in the show.

Ms Witchard sought to show how the tranquil, peaceful and spacious characteristics offered by Far-Eastern garden can be successfully amalgamated with Western styles.

Such demand, too, is controlled by the supply on the internet, as most florists in Bridgend and the surrounding areas have also gone online to bring their services to their customers. Be inspired by this year's RHS flower show in Cardiff and get preparing to grow a garden of your own from the comfort of your own living room. Florists all around the country are already using their laptops to get ready for a visit to the castle next April

For those flower fanatics who missed this

For those flower fanatics who missed this year's show can wait until next year's extravaganza. Alternatively, if Welsh flower fans can't wait that long, they can conduct a search online for 'flowers swansea', 'flowers Cardiff', or 'flowers bridgend', for example - or anywhere else in the UK, in fact. Florists will love nothing more than to reproduce their versions of the RHS Cardiff Flower Show 2011, especially for you and your special occasion!
