What is a Security Camera?

By David Woodhouse

Security Cameras - also known as "surveillance" or "CCTV" cameras are specialized video cameras that can record video to a hard drive.

Depending on the make and model, these cameras can record incredible high quality video footage that is stored on a computer hard disk.

It is more common for business and corporations to have dedicated on site security staff keeping eyes on real time video. When something shady appears on screen, the person viewing can call for security or police to investigate closer.

This is in contrast to those security cameras that have one exclusive purpose... to record to a computers hard drive.

Frequently these cameras are "Not monitored" and can even give you the ability to watch footage from your mobile phone.

Attached to each camera are cables taking the video footage to a computer hard drive - which is then stored for (future) viewing at a later point.

Regrettably the genuine value of the footage captured often only comes to light when it is being used to track break ins and theft.

The video shown can become incontestable evidence against arrested people should any case reach the judiciary system.

Depending on your central hard disk sizing, configuration and the caliber of the cameras, your video footage can be recorded continuously from anything within 3-6 weeks.

The larger your hard drive, the longer you'll be able to record for.

Many security camera systems now come with at least a 500 Gigabyte hard drive, that can be increased to over 2 Terabytes (at the time of penning this report).

It is so well known that Security Cameras improve your security that you can even buy fake cameras and install fake "CCTV Cameras In Use" stickers around your property to increase the possible security benefit to your property.
