5 of the UK's Most Skilled Racehorse Trainers

By Ruth Williams

A top-notch racehorse trainer can extract the full potential from any racehorse, giving him an optimal chance for on-track success. A good trainer ensures the horses health and racing condition. In the UK, five of the most successful racehorse trainers are Jonjo O'Neill, Nigel Twiston-Davies, Paul Nicholls, Ferdy Murphy, and Jenny Pitman.

Jonjo O'Neill's career began with his years as a jockey, during which he was victorious in more than 900 races. His intimate knowledge of racing strategies has led him to become a very successful racehorse trainer, and since 1986 he has trained countless winners on the track. A recent winner at Cheltenham was Wichita Lineman. O'Neill consistently produces good results and has trained over 100 winners in a season multiple times.

Nigel Twiston-Davies specializes in National Hunt racing. Dating back to 1981, he has been responsible for training more than 1000 winning horses, including the famous Imperial Commander. Two other horses that he trained, Bindaree and Earth Summit, both won the Grand National.

Paul Nicholls also specializes in National Hunt racing where he has trained over 1500 winning horses and won four Cheltenham Gold Cups. Dating back to the start of his training in 1991, Nicholls has been awarded the British Jump Racing Champion Trainer title on four occasions. Known for his honesty and friendliness, this man maintains stables in Ditcheat, Somerset.

Ferdy Murphy, another outstanding racehorse trainer, typically trains more than 60 winners for the National Hunt. Murphy has won at Aintree and Cheltenham and has trained such winners as Joes Edge, Lantartique, and New Alco. Murphy is located in North Yorkshire.

In 1983, Jenny Pittman gained recognition as the first female trainer of a Grand National winner. Now retired, she spends her time attending races and writing novels that often draw on her racing expertise. A recipient of the OBE for her horse training accomplishments, she has also been an inspiring role model for generations of aspiring young female racehorse trainers.

Each trainer has deep knowledge of the horses in their care, and understands exactly which training techniques and routines will work best for each one. The longevity of their time devoted to the horse racing industry guarantees that they can quickly train every horse to compete at the highest level. Beginning owners shall discover that entrusting their horses to such trainers is a very wise decision.
