Deciding between care homes

By Elliot Roberts

When you start searching for care homes, you soon start to realise that there are plenty of different sorts to choose from and that they all offer different facilities and different levels of care.

There are some care homes that do not offer nursing care and these are usually called residential care homes. Residents can stay there on a long or short term basis, depending upon their needs and they will be given accommodation as well as help in a range of areas while they are at these care homes. The carers here will give the residents help and assistance with their washing and shaving and general personal hygiene and they will also help residents with food preparation and eating meals.

Residents at these care homes might also need psychological support and this will be on offer too, as well as any help they need with simple everyday tasks such as getting dressed and getting in and out of bed.

The other sort of care home to consider is the type that has nursing care available. These sorts of care homes will offer the same care and help as the other care homes, but they will also offer nurses and care assistants too; who are available to offer assistance 24 hours a day. If someone has health problems that require regular medical attention, then it could be that these sorts of care homes are more suited to them.

These care homes will provide nurses and care assistants to look after the residents but will also often provide therapy, which can come in the form of physical therapy, speech therapy or pain therapy.

So these are the two sorts of care homes available to potential residents. And while you're considering them, it's important that you take your time to think about what facilities and help the person who will be going to the care home will need.
