Depending on types of design and size of shapes of carvings you need to come up with, various stone carving tools are used at different stages. There are big ones that require a sizable amount of equipments as well as small ones that require significant equipments of work in size. The items used affect the output directly.

Hitting tools are the most useful equipments used in initial stages of sculpturing when the stones are being extracted from parent source. The equipments used depend may vary from mallets, adzes and hammers that are teethed. The equipments used are mainly made special for such purpose because the raw material used for making the sculpture is very sensitive.

Pitching tools are required in the second stage to make the products form a shape from which to work on. A block is gotten by use of such equipment from which the end product is gotten. The block is used to avoid making errors that may be experienced during the work itself.

Chisels are also an important work partner to a sculptor in his day in day out work. The chisels make small engravings on the raw stone. They also are used in engraving chippings on the rock being used until a desired design is acquired. Chisels vary from small handheld for small products to very large ones that work on pneumatic principle for making huge sculptures.

An abrasive such as a sand paper is required in the final stage of the sculpturing process so as to come up with a better looking product in the end. They are used to scrub off the rough surfaces from the obtained sculpture as well as smoothing of the edges that might not be well aligned.

There are many improvements coming up nowadays on the carving tools. Some have been introduced for testing like the high carbon steel that is heat treated. Depending on the desired outcome so many tools can be used for the work of a sculptor.
