My uncle sculpts wood. It's just something he learned as a boy and has developed into 85 years of hard work to date. All the family has been gifted with one or more of his many beautiful birds or animals over the years. Nevertheless, I think the pair of ducks that he carved out of an old cedar tree in my grandmother's backyard is what I love best. As kids, me and my cousins would climb that giant old tree and spend hours of chatting - oh, all the talks that old tree listened to! There are times we would eat our lunch up on its branches and stay clear of younger kids. And sometimes I'd climb up to my favorite branch to be alone and think about things like nature and the tree itself - unusual for an eight year old little girl. It was under that tree I had my first kiss. And it was in the arms of that tree that I cried into its branches, tears when I was sad. After everyone grew up, had families of their own and our grandmother departed this life, the cedar tree's life expired also, so it was removed. My uncle did not want the wood to go to waste, rather than disposing of it, he carved it into magnificent artworks. I know that stately old cedar would be proud of its legacy expressed in creations of art.
It gave birth for my passion for anything that is sculpted from wood. Through the years I have quite a collection of sculpted wooden birds, and placed a few of them in the trees in the yard. There was a rise and fall of interest on wood sculpting during the Dark Ages, and period of wars and barbarism. Working on wood carvings was done almost only in the Monasteries where there was no threat. From 700 to 900 A.D., some parts of Europe prohibited artists from sculpting images because many of them made replicas of pagan gods, symbols and emblems. Many of these artists left for other parts of Europe and found work in the Monasteries crafting relief carvings on wooden panels and doors. After the year 1000 A.D., the artists were freer to express themselves without being punished.
