How To Select Home Accessories

By Bill McNeil

Choosing home accessories requires just as much coordination skill as putting together an outfit. However, there are some simple and effective ways for you to get the look you desire in your house. There are a few steps to achieving the perfect look. Here are the most basic rules.

First, identify who you are as a person. Go through everything from favorite musical style to favorite colors. Identify your dominating characteristics. Are you loud and crazy, or do you prefer a more quiet, solitary lifestyle? If you commonly play host to parties or like to set up book discussions in your living room are all important factors of what you should be choosing.

Studying the era your house was built in can help you figure out how to decorate it. See what will fit where and whether or not modern are will look good on a wall that's been designed in the 1940s. Remember your goal is to enhance its appearance, not jumble it. It's important to avoid clashing colors and styles. Don't pair your antique furniture with edgy, modern art. Keep themes cohesive and well balanced.

Rooms tell a story about the people who occupy them. Think about the story you want to tell and act accordingly. Since an accessory can be anything from a ceiling fixture to a lace doily, the sky's the limit when it comes to choosing the things you personally prefer. It's basic purpose to enhance the appearance of any given place. Put substantial thought into any big purchases.

Perhaps you've been stuck on what to buy. Take these simple steps. For example, perhaps you want to remodel your bathroom. You paint the walls mint green and you're looking for a bath rug and curtain to match the colors. Don't pick the same color, pick something that stands out but at the same time, accents the greenish hue. Chocolate brown, chic white or sky blue are examples of this.

Is your kitchen looking dull? Instead of buying a new table, just buy a new tablecloth. You'd be surprised how much one small pop of color can change the entire appearance of your room. Try filling an unused glass or vase with flowers. Invest in some fake blooms that you may rotate all year round. Trim curtains with a little bit of lace to make them look brand new.

Accessorizing your home is easy and lots of fun. You don't have to spend all kinds of money to get the look you want. Just follow these few pieces of advice to breathe some fresh air into your living spaces.
