Choosing Your Babies Gender: Is It A Choice Parents Should Make?

By Helene Bachus

For any number of personal reasons, parents-to-be may decide they would like to conceive a baby of a particular gender. Women often express a need to have a girl while fathers-to-be more often have a preference for a boy. It is also not unusual for a couple who've already got children of a particular gender to decide they would like a child of opposite gender.

Many professional couples often wait until later on in life to have children and have subsequently have fewer children. This more planned approach to raising a family can increase their interest in baby gender selection. While scientists maintain that gender selection occurs nearly completely at random - about 51% of babies born are boys - there's a lot of anecdotal evidence that suggests it is possible to learn how to conceive a girl or conceive a boy.

No matter whether baby gender selection is possible is it OK to have a gender preference for your child? Some would say that attempting to influence the gender of your baby amounts to little more than meddling with the natural order. However for many couples increasing the chances they conceive a baby of specific gender is simply an expression of private preference.

Of a group of expectant parents-to-be who used an ultrasound examination to determine the gender of their baby, more than 4 out of every 5 surveyed noted that one of the main reasons in their decision to learn the gender of their baby was so they could deal with any potential disappointment before birth. This suggests there was a clear preference to either have a boy or a girl.

Whether you try to influence the gender of your child is not a straightforward question to answer. What eventually matters is that without regard for the decision you make, you decide to love the child you get. Babies are precious gift and the start of a lifetime of memories.
