Are you suffering from arthritis? Did you know that arthritis is the most common joint disorder in the body? It is a disease process that leads to excessive wearing of the cartilage cushions (discs) between joints and of the bones that make up the joint. As it progresses more cartilage begins to wear away and as a result bone on bone contact occurs resulting in spurs (abnormal outgrowth of bone). This outgrowth of bone is the bodies attempt to strengthen the region but sadly it just causes rigidity and eventually pain.

The most common symptoms of arthritis include neck pain, back pain and general joint pain and stiffness. Many complain that there pain is worse in the morning or with movement following sitting or lying down. Many people also complain of an increase in symptoms with rainy or cold weather. As the condition advances shooting or burning pain along with tingling, numbness or weakness occur. All of these symptoms are signs that pain is coming from the nerve, which is irritated or compressed. Arthritis can have a major impact on a person's quality of life as it begins to hamper activities of daily living and prevent enjoyable extra curricular activities. Rather than mask the problem with pain medication chiropractic care addresses the root of the problem by focusing on the spine and central nervous system (CNS). Chiropractic has been able to provide relief to arthritis sufferers and stop the progression of the disease. Chiropractic adjustments are a very effective way to restore mobility, relieve pain and joint stiffness.

Once a person is diagnosed with osteoarthritis, chiropractic treatment becomes very important to halt the progression. Unfortunately once the disease begins, chiropractic can't reverse the degeneration, but can help stop it. As the disease progresses, if not physically treated, joint fusion can occur. This happens when the stiff joints are not moved and bone spurs form. The immobile joints then become prone to degenerative disc disease because the disc is not able to receive proper nutrition. Nutrition is delivered to the disc by normal spinal movements pumping blood in and out of the area. If the disc is deprived of nutrients, it will begin to degenerate leading to a decrease in size and therefore is less effective in cushioning and absorbing the shock between the joints. With less disc size comes less room for spinal nerves to exit the vertebral column, which increases the likelihood for nerve compression. If nerve compression occurs the patient will acquire radiating pain, numbness, or tingling.

Regular visits to your chiropractor may be able to help you prevent osteoarthritis. Correcting dysfunctional joints allows proper movement and can reduce your risk of the disease. It will also help keep discs healthy and prevent other causes of joint pain. If you suffer from osteoarthritis or any other form of arthritis find a chiropractor to learn how they can help you conservatively control your symptoms and prevent the progression of the disease.
