Security Services With Different Aims

By Claude Peter Stinson

In the movies, depictions of security services tend to fall into two categories. The first is the comical, bumbling mall cops who can't get things right. The second is the highly professional international jet-set variety that pulls off the unimaginable. While these certainly exist somewhere, in reality the industry is quite varied.

Most of us encounter local guards where we shop or bank. Some of these operations can be quite professionally run and hire people with law enforcement backgrounds. Others basically hire caretakers in uniforms.
The same goes for residential and commercial buildings. In urban areas, you tend to find organizations that are prepared for more serious possibilities. This is especially true when it comes to companies with sensitive materials like financial, medical or corporate information.

Governments and corporations alike often employ specialized companies to protect sensitive areas like critical infrastructure. Pipelines, power plants of all kinds and defense-related operations rely on these specialists. As outsourcing has become more common in recent years, these services commonly operate in countries around the globe in multitude of contexts.

Threats vary from region to region, and kidnapping is a localized, but real possibility in some areas. Companies sending executives to these regions sometimes include kidnapping prevention training with their standard benefits packages. Trainers and personnel have to have a lot of experience in how kidnappers work and take the region into account.

Fortunately for us, the daily work of most security services is much less exciting than what we see in the movies. Otherwise, life would be quite chaotic. But, part of the reason that we get to go on with our days with less danger is due to the hard work and diligence of these providers.
