Compost is the biological break down or decomposition of organic material. Think of a forest floor with all of the natural decomposing matter like leaf litter, animal droppings, fruit, rotten branches, dead insects and so on. The soil under the decomposing matter is rich, as the organic material breaks down and adds rich nutrients to the soil. The result is rich, crumbly humus, exactly what a gardener would like to achieve when composting at home.

Composting can be done with no up-front expense which makes it suited to all households.
